All week I've been feeling under the weather. It's either my allergies or sinuses or both. I feel as gloomy as it looks outside. I've made friends with nyquil and dayquil and most of the employees at starbucks. I want to cuddle up with my pillow but I need to run. I'm not sure if I should run long distances when I feel this way. I'm not sure I could if I tried. I'll probably skip tomorrow's 10 miler and stick to 5 miles or less. I sure do hope I get better soon cause it's gonna hurt making up the miles.
Our household is also very busy praying for Don. He has his transplant Monday. We're praying everything goes well and this is the cure he's been waiting for.

My week
21.5 miles this week. I ran 9 of those miles this morning. I'm thrilled!! It's the farthest I've ever ran! My calves are sore but it felt good to push myself. The run started out hard and stayed hard the entire time. Some days you can run what seems like forever and other days it's hard to find a groove and get in a few miles. Today was a no groove day. And what makes it even worse is I have NO idea what causes a bad day. I'm getting in plenty of carbs and fluids. Who knows!!!!

Lesson Learned
3 glasses of wine does not make for a good run. I really should have done 4 miles but only did 2.5 tonight. Well that and my littlest noise maker needed held. So of course I had to quit running and tend to his needs.

The 53 Runner’s Commandments
by Joe Kelly
1. Don’t be a whiner. Nobody likes a whiner, not even other whiners.
2. Walking out the door is often the toughest part of a run.
3. Don’t make running your life. Make it part of your life.
4. During group training runs, don’t let anyone run alone.
5. Keep promises, especially ones made to yourself.
6. When doing group runs, start on time no matter who’s missing.
7. The faster you are the less you should talk about your times.
8. Keep a quarter in your pocket. One day you’ll need to call for a ride.
9. Don’t compare yourself to other runners.
10. All runners are equal, some are just faster than others.
11. Keep in mind that the later in the day it gets, the more likely it is that you won’t run.
12. For a change of pace, get driven out and then run back.
13. If it was easy, everybody would be a runner.
14. When standing in starting lines, remind yourself how fortunate you are to be there.
15. Getting out of shape is much easier than getting into shape.
16. A bad day of running still beats a good day at work.
17. Talk like a runner. *Singlets*are worn on warm days. *Tank tops* are worn to the beach.
18. Don’t talk about your running injuries. People don’t want to hear about your sore knee or black toe.
19. Don’t always run alone.
20. Don’t always run with people.
21. Approach running as if the quality of your life depended on it.
22. No matter how slow you run it is still faster than someone sitting on a couch.
23. Keep in mind that the harder you run during training, the luckier you’ll get during racing.
24. Races aren’t just for those who can run fast.
25. There are no shortcuts to running excellence.
26. The best runs sometimes come on days when you didn’t feel like running.
27. Be modest after a race, especially if you have reason to brag.
28. If you say, *Let's run this race together* then you must stay with that person no matter how slow.
29. Think twice before agreeing to run with someone during a race.
30. There is nothing boring about running. There are, however, boring people who run.
31. Look at hills as opportunities to pass people.
32. Distance running is like cod liver oil. At first it makes you feel awful, then it makes you feel better.
33. Never throw away the instructions to your running watch.
34. Don’t try to outrun dogs.
35. Don’t trust runners who show up at races claiming to be tired, out of share, or not feeling well.
36. Don’t wait for perfect weather. If you do, you won’t run very often.
37. When tempted to stop being a runner, make a list of the reasons you started.
38. Never run alongside very old or very young racers. They get all of the applause.
39. Without goals, training has no purpose.
40. During training runs, let the slowest runner in the group set the pace.
41. The first year in a new age group offers the best opportunity for trophies.
42. Go for broke, but be prepared to be broken.
43. Spend more time running on the roads than sitting on the couch.
44. Make progress in your training, but progress at your own rate.
45. *Winning* means different things to different people.
46. Unless you make your living as a runner, don’t take running too seriously.
47. Runners who never fail are runners who never try anything great.
48. Never tell a runner that he or she doesn’t look good in tights.
49. Never confuse the Ben-Gay tube with the toothpaste tube.
50. Never apologize for doing the best you can.
51. Preventing running injuries is easier than curing them.
52. Running is simple. Don’t make it complicated.
53. Running is always enjoyable. Sometimes, though, the joy doesn’t come until the end of the run.

EIGHT
is the number of miles I ran today. So far that's the farthest I've ever ran! The last mile was difficult. I had a side stitch and my legs felt so heavy. But I kept going. I kept thinking about Don and how he and Jo Ann got up early to watch the boys so both Kevin and I could run. I could tell Don didn't feel well. I can't even begin to imagine the pain he lives with every day, or what he wouldn't give to go out at 7 am and run 8 miles in 30 degrees. So yes my legs hurt and my knees make funny noises when I go up the stairs and I'm exhausted like first trimester pregnant exhausted, but I'll run again tomorrow. And I may run in pain but I'll put a smile on my face and run because Don cannot run right now.
And it makes me so proud to be running for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. They are some of the best people you'll every meet. I pray all of our hard work pays off and the scientists find a cure for blood cancers!!

You'd be surprised what your body will do!
Mine ran 6.75 miles today. And so far it hasn't fell apart. I'm praying my knees don't cause me problems over the next few days. I'll get in some yoga tomorrow and hopefully that will help.
My new shoes caused a blister on my right ankle. I taped it real good and made it through my run. I have to go back to First Gear to get some socks a running partner recommended. I like short socks and she has some that have a lip on the back to cover your ankle and prevent blisters. It's crazy all the stuff they make for runners. Now if only it will stop sleeting so we can get out of the house!

Made my day!
Got new shoes!
I love them and my knees do too! My knees ached after my first 4 miler and Kevin was in some pain after his first 6 miler so we splurged and treated ourselves to new shoes. You'd thought I got new Choos I'm so excited. I've never been so excited to run! Kevin got a sitter and we have date night at the Y tonight. So goes the life of marathon trainers!

Motivation please!! And some sunshine too!
“That which we persist in doing becomes easier for us to do; not that the nature of the thing itself has changed, but that our capacity to do has increased.” - Ralph Waldo Emerson
Trying to motivate myself today. It's cold with a mix of snow/rain/ice coming down and my comforter wants to cuddle. And my little blue eyes has teeth coming in so I must hold him all day! There's no getting out of cuddling. As much as I try, I can't get out of it today. I'll run when they sleep.

I wanna get out!!
but the weather isn't gonna let me. I guess I'm gonna have to buy some cold weather gear. A little snow and cold shouldn't keep me indoors. So I guess I'll tell Kevin I need to go shopping soon! In the meantime, I have my trusty treadmill to keep me busy. That requires a little cooperation from the boys. But I have a plan. I can always run at the Y and leave the kids in the nursery. Or just get up early and go in the mornings before they wake up. I'm gonna try that as long as I can get up my butt up and meet Sheena. She's a wonderful running partner. I'm very thankful she'll meet me early in the morning!
Right now I'm trying to take it easy. Training doesn't officially start until February 8 but I'm running every other day for 30 minutes to get a head start. It can't hurt anyways!
I'm also a little overwhelmed at the amount of money Kevin and I have to raise. I'm working on my letter and will just try to take it one day at a time. And since we're getting snow tonight and tomorrow, I'll focus on making snowmans and sledding with my boys!

Who knew
I had it in me to run 2 miles w/o stopping? I haven't been on the treadmill since August or September when I was running next to Sheena and Becky, but I set out to do my required 30 minutes of running/walking on Friday and I ended up running the entire time. And I've been paying for it ever since. Yesterday was rough but today was even worse. My quads are screaming and I guess I have muscles right next to my knees cause they hurt too. My knees don't hurt. Just the muscles. So I got out an old tube of aspercreme and it didn't do much. But no pain, no gain right?
When I'm sore like today, I like to remind myself about my reasons for running. Don, my father-in-law is fighting myltiple myeloma. He had chemo on Friday and Jo Ann, my mother-in-law, said he's not feeling well. I can't even begin to imagine what he's going through. It's moments like this that I pray for his health and to thank the Lord that I'm healthy enough to run and have sore muscles. I'm also thankful Kevin has his health and can run with me.
Yesterday was a rest day. So that means running/walking today. When my babies go to bed I'll get my phone out and listen to some running tunes and try to walk more than run this time. Gotta take it easy cause I run again tomorrow and the next day. Don't wanna over do it you know!

Leap of Faith
Well I've thought about it and prayed about it and finally made the decision to run a marathon. I asked my husband if he would join me and he was actually very excited about running a marathon. I am excited. I'm also worried, scared and some might say a bit crazy but more than anything I'm up for the challenge.
Why a marathon some might ask. Cause I love running and I've always wanted to do a marathon, but those reasons alone won't get me across the finish line. I'm running because the Wichita chapter of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society has stalked me for years with their direct-mail flyers and this time it worked. Run for a greater cause and raise money to help cure blood cancers. "Create a world without cancer" is what they've challenged me to do. And of course I'm up for that. Especially when my father-in-law starts chemo this week to fight myeloma. God Bless him!!
So I'm gonna get off the coach, get outside and find my inner athlete. Please join me on my journey to run my first marathon and fight cancer.
